Bixby is Samsung’s voice-activated virtual assistant. Bixby debuted in the Galaxy S8 series in 2017 and is now available in the S8, S9, and S10 series. The virtual assistant can be called up by pressing the dedicated Bixby button - located just below the volume buttons - on these Galaxy devices. When a user speaks the “Hi Bixby” dialogue, they are able to talk to Bixby using natural language.
Samsung’s Bixby has functionalities that make it on par with its competitors (i.e., Google Assistant, Siri, and Amazon’s Alexa). All Samsung S-series phones come with Google Assistant and Samsung Bixby pre-installed in them.
Bixby is an AI system that is designed to make device interaction easier and avoid the complexity of increasingly fully-featured devices. It lets you carry out a full range of interactions that are more advanced than simply launching an app, as most other assistants do.
Bixby Voice is made to adapt to a person’s manner of speaking, not the other way around. Bixby voice allows a person to do things like changing the volume or increasing the brightness of the phone. Generally, when it comes to device control, Bixby is very good at composing messages for you, reading incoming messages, etc.
Many apps and services can be integrated into Bixby Home (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Spotify, and your Gallery) which allows a person to access highlights from all these apps in Bixby Home. It also has cards that show pictures you’ve recently taken, current Twitter trends, or controls for your Spotify music.
Bixby Vision uses machine learning and Samsung’s database, simultaneously, to make the camera more useful. Bixby Vision recognizes several categories of objects: Place, Text, Image, Food, QR Codes, Wine, and Shopping.
Bixby Vision also tries to recognize everything in front of the camera so that it can serve up information related to its findings.
Bixby Routines allows you to automate a chain of actions using the IFTTT (If This, Then That) principle. Bixby Routines lets you set up Bixby to handle various repetitive tasks through various triggers. For example, you can make your phone turn off its dark mode in the morning and play some light music as soon as the alarm goes off in the morning.
