What is a prompt?

This prompt is more focused, but it generates an overly lengthy response. Let's try to specify the length:

Prompt: What are the main differences between unit testing and integration testing? Explain in two short paragraphs.

We see that being specific about our needs can greatly influence the responses and whether they fit our requirements.

Note: A bad prompt doesn't necessarily mean that ChatGPT will produce a bad output. In most cases, a bad prompt will simply fail to be specific or provide enough task-related context for the responses to be useful.

Elements of a prompt

A prompt typically comprises one or more of the following components:

  • Instruction: This element entails providing the model with a specific task or instruction that we want it to perform. By clearly articulating the desired action, we can guide the model's response in a targeted manner.

  • Context: Including external information or additional context within the prompt can help steer the model toward generating more accurate and relevant responses. Contextual details provide the model with a better understanding of the given scenario. The context should be separated from the instruction using some delimiter like “###” or by enclosing the context part in triple quotes (""").

  • Output indicator: This element refers to the type or format of the desired output from the model. By specifying the expected format, such as a sentence, a list, or a paragraph, we can guide the model in generating the response in the desired manner.

It's important to note that not all prompts require all three elements, and the composition of a prompt depends on the specific task or objective.
