AWS Data Exchange allows the integration of third-party data from an AWS-hosted data marketplace into services such as Amazon S3. This exchange service was launched in 2019.

Third-party data providers include Reuters, Foursquare, Change Healthcare, Equifax, and many others. The provided data products span across industries, including:

  • Automotive data

  • Environmental data

  • Financial services data

  • Gaming data

  • Healthcare & life sciences data

  • Manufacturing data

  • Media and entertainment data

  • Public sector data

  • Resources data

  • Retail, location, and marketing data

  • Telecommunications data

After subscribing to a data product, customers can use the subscribed data from other AWS services. For example, customers can set up an Amazon CloudWatch event to receive alerts when updates to the data become available.

Using an AWS Data Exchange product

Let’s dive into using an actual AWS Data Exchange product to clarify how the service works.

Subscribing to a data product

In this example, we’ll subscribe to a free data product provided by the company Rearc. The data tells us how often diabetes occurs in different countries. This prevalence data is expressed as a percentage of the population aged 20 to 79 and was initially gathered by the World Bank Open Data project.

To find the data product to subscribe to, we go to “AWS Data Exchange” in the AWS Console. Under the “Browse catalog” page, we type “diabetes” into the search box. We see “Diabetes Prevalence (% Population) | World Bank Open Data” as the top search result.
