AWS IoT Core

Learn how AWS supports IoT and use AWS IoT Core to register devices and route device messages.

AWS IoT Core allows the connection of IoT devices and messages to AWS services. The term “IoT” describes the inclusion of sensors and other technologies into physical devices that can then transmit data through a communications network (e.g., the public internet).

AWS IoT Core is designed to connect billions of IoT devices and route trillions of messages to AWS services for further processing and analysis.

IoT use cases

Consumer and business use cases exist for IoT devices:

In the example of a smart home, we could have a robot vacuum that we could enable and track from anywhere in the world. The Amazon Alexa line of voice-recognition devices can be considered IoT devices. Security cameras and door locks are also increasingly accessible from the cloud through IoT technologies.

Industrial factories are increasingly using IoT to help track and streamline processes. For example, Amazon.com's ability to quickly fulfill and deliver online shopping orders depends on a suite of technologies, including robots, to help move packages from one location to another.

Categories of IoT business use cases include:

  • Predictive quality: Ingest data from manufacturing equipment, environmental conditions, and human observations to improve product quality.
