This course is an introduction to object-oriented programming in PHP. You’ll start with the basics of the OOP paradigm and get familiar with classes, objects, methods, and properties. You’ll then chain methods and properties using the this keyword before working with access modifiers and magic methods. With these basics down, you’ll take a deep dive into object-oriented programming in PHP, including inheritance, abstraction, polymorphism, and namespaces. After exploring exception handling, you’ll use these object-oriented techniques to build, manage, and edit a PHP database.

# What is type hinting?

**Type hinting** is used to specify the expected data type (arrays, objects, interfaces, and so on) for an argument in a function declaration. It is especially useful because it results in better code organization and improved error messages.




# Type hinting for arrays

When we want a function to only get arrays as valid arguments, we can put the keyword `array` in front of the argument name. Let’s look at the syntax for it:

function functionName (array $argumentName) {
    // The code block
}
``` 

In the following example, the `calcNumMilesOnFullTank()` function calculates the number of miles a car can be driven on a full tank of gas by using the tank volume as well as the number of miles per gallon (mpg). This function accepts only an array as an argument because the argument name is preceded by the `array` keyword.
