Test case template

Software testing is a vital component of the software development lifecycle. Test case templates are an excellent way for quality assurance engineers to cleanly structure their testing results.

A test case template is a document containing an organized list of test cases for different test scenarios that check whether or not the software has the intended functionality.

A test case is a set of steps carried out to test a specific feature of an application. Other than the executable steps, a test case also contains preconditions for testing, test data provided, expected outcome, and actual result. A tester can judge the success of a test case by comparing its expected and actual results to gauge if the application is functioning according to the customer’s requirements.

A test scenario, on the other hand, is a high-level feature of an application. A test scenario is a collection of test cases grouped to judge the performance of a feature. For example, checking registration for submission functionality of an application is a test scenario that could include test cases such as:

  • Check software behavior when all fields are filled with correct data.
  • Check software behavior when a required field is left empty.
  • Check software behavior when the form is being resubmitted with different details.

Below is a test case template for checking if an application successfully changes a user’s username.
