Maven is the de-facto build tool of choice for Java projects and has wide adoption at the enterprise level.

In this course, you will learn the fundamentals of Maven so that you can start to inject build automation into your own projects. You’ll start by exploring the basics such as plugins, goals, coordinates, and lifecycles.

In the latter half, you will dive into more advanced concepts such as dependencies, inheritance, aggregation, and build profiles. 

By the end of this course, you will have just the right amount of knowledge for you to quickly become productive when working with Maven.

Build Java Projects with Maven

The word archetype is defined as _a very typical example of a certain person or thing_, or _an original pattern or model from which all other things of the same kind are made_. In Maven, Archetype is a project templating toolkit. Using the archetype mechanism, an author can create Maven project templates for users, and provide them with the means to generate parameterized versions of those project templates. Developers can quickly create and start working with new projects that are already set up with best practices and standards.

An example use case would be if an organization wants to standardize J2EE development within its ranks, it can provide archetypes for EJBs, WARs, or other web services. Once these archetypes are created and deployed in the organization's repository, they can be used by developers within the organization to create new projects. Maven provides several archetype artifacts and some of the important ones are listed below:

1. **maven-archetype-archetype**: An archetype to generate a sample archetype project.

2. **maven-archetype-j2ee-simple**: An archetype to generate a simplified sample J2EE application.

3. **maven-archetype-mojo**: An archetype to generate a sample Maven plugin.

4. **maven-archetype-plugin**: An archetype to generate a sample Maven plugin.

5. **maven-archetype-plugin-site**: An archetype to generate a sample Maven plugin site.

6. **maven-archetype-portlet**: An archetype to generate a sample JSR-268 Portlet.

7. **maven-archetype-quickstart**: An archetype to generate a sample Maven project.

8. **maven-archetype-simple**: An archetype to generate a simple Maven project.

9. **maven-archetype-site**: An archetype to generate a sample Maven site which demonstrates some of the supported document types like APT, XDoc, and FML and demonstrates how to _**i18n**_ your site.

10. **maven-archetype-site-simple**: An archetype to generate a sample Maven site.

11. **maven-archetype-webapp**: An archetype to generate a sample Maven Webapp project.


Note that in the above list, there is also an archetype to create a template project for creating an _archetype_ project. Maven helps you get started quickly with an archetype project. 

In the exercise below, we'll create a project using the _quickstart_ archetype. Notice Maven will generate the following directory structure for the project.
