What is Web3?

Learn to distinguish between the marketing hype and the real technical innovation at the heart of Web3.

Web3 vs Web2

The term Web3 is commonly used to refer to software that is partly or fully deployed on a public, permissionless blockchain—as opposed to Web2, for traditional server-client web applications. Though it's largely how blockchain software is referred to, Web3 is a marketing term that may give off the wrong impression that it's a new version of the web and that smart contracts are meant to replace all web applications. Web3 is just a better way to control access and process payments.
