On-Demand Capacity and Scaling

Having understood what provisioned capacity is and how it works, it’s time to move on to the next setting that DynamoDB has to manage and understand the traffic being received . In this lesson, we’re going to learn about on-demand capacity and how it can help us in scenarios where workloads are highly variable.

What is On-demand capacity?

On-demand capacity is more flexible than provisioned capacity, because it doesn’t need to know beforehand the traffic that is going to be received. In fact, this type of configuration is more beneficial in scenarios where there may be unpredictable and variable load peaks throughout the day.
