It’s certainly not an easy transition, and I’ve heard many disappointing outcomes of folks who have tried but were unsuccessful. But if this is something you’re set on, here are some tips to help make this happen. These tips are targeted towards folks looking to internally transfer to a TPM role. 



First and foremost, you need to know what you're getting yourself into. Set up coffee chats with as many TPMs as you can, and pick their brain about the role. These are some things you should ask in this meeting: 

- What do you do as a TPM? 
- How did you get into the TPM role? 
- What keeps you in the TPM role? 
- What advice do you have for someone trying to get into the TPM role? 
- Can you introduce me to other TPMs?
You should use these meetings to build your network, learn about the role, and get a feel if this is something you want to do. It’s probably not a good idea to ask for a job in the first meeting. But if they hint at it, you can get a feel if the person is open to having a follow-up conversation about potential opportunities. Don’t have any expectations going into the meeting, but be ready to seize any opportunities if they arise.
