The Handbook for Ruby Developers

This is a very important question for those who know nothing about programming. But before answering it, let’s go back. Since Ruby is mainly a language for web programming, it’s a popular language for developers who work remotely.Working remotely on one project is particularly prevalent in web programming.

This is understandable. For example, to create software for aircraft, it is more useful to be in a science center, working hand in hand with colleagues there. But in the case of web projects, it is often unimportant where the developer is actually located. The team 37signals, whose developers are located worldwide, has also contributed to the remote development concept. The first version of Rails, which is probably the most popular framework used for web development, appeared in 37signals.

It has been proven over the last ten years that remote development is possible. We don’t always need to keep a team of programmers all in the same office. This is a huge plus for Ruby programmers, because they need not be tied to any specific location and can work for a company in the US even from a small town in Greece or Spain. And in that case, they will receive a higher salary than what they would get locally.

It is worth noting that the number of jobs in a certain language is not the most important indicator, and it can be of negligible importance when making a life decision. It’s tough to predict something several years ahead in the IT industry. But, the good news is that we don’t need thousands of jobs.We only need to find one. It does not matter how much time we spend looking for a job—a week, two weeks, or two months—because we’ll certainly find one.

Here, we come to the statistics collected by Ruby students. How much do Ruby programmers earn? Before answering this question, we will clarify that we are only talking about remote working. The remote salary market is more stable. Programmers from different countries balance it out. There is no sense in comparing salaries based on location: a Ruby programmer often works remotely. In most cases, this is more profitable. It is also assumed that programmers have a basic knowledge of English, so that they can communicate with clients from other countries.

Salary categories can be divided into three parts. They may differ depending on the type of work—remote or in an office—and the geographical location of the programmer,  though this is immaterial if you are working remotely. At present, the hourly rate for a programmer with one year’s experience is from 15 to 30 US dollars an hour. For programmers with one to three years of experience, the salary is usually between 30 to 50 dollars. And for programmers with experience of three years and upwards, the salary rate is 50 dollars an hour. Upon reaching the 50-dollar level, it all becomes very individual.
