Introduction to the course

In this course, we will begin with the basics, such as an introduction to the Beego framework, its directory structure, and the steps to create our first Beego project. This will set the stage for more advanced topics and techniques.

As we progress, we will dive deeper into Beego’s powerful features, focusing particularly on its object-relational mapping (ORM) system. This will allow us to handle database interactions. We will also learn how to execute simple queries, use raw queries, employ query builders, and manage transactions using Beego ORM.

Then, we will develop a hands-on project, a note-keeping application. This will involve developing models and controllers and creating CRUD APIs. Additionally, we will enhance the user interface with Bootstrap and add user authentication mechanisms, including OAuth 2.0 for social login capabilities.

Finally, we will learn about deploying the application to the production environment. We will cover deployment strategies using GitHub Actions and Nginx as a reverse proxy.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for anyone who wants to build web applications or microservices using Go. Anyone who is already familiar with the Go programming language can benefit from learning Beego, which can be a great way to expand their skill set.

Beego is a highly regarded framework in the Go community, and learning it can be a valuable addition. It can also enhance your ability to create robust and scalable web applications.

Course prerequisites

To learn web development with Beego, the following prerequisites are recommended:

Basic understanding of Golang

It is recommended to have a basic understanding of the Go programming language. You should be familiar with:

  • Syntax
  • Data types
  • Functions
  • Pointers
  • Structs
  • Arrays
  • Slices and maps
  • Control structures
  • Packages
  • Interfaces

Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

Beego uses these technologies to build and render web pages and web applications. It is designed to work seamlessly with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and it provides tools and libraries to facilitate their use. Without a basic understanding of these web development concepts, it can be challenging to use Beego effectively.

Developers who are not familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript might struggle to understand how Beego works and how to use its features and tools to build web applications. In short, having a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is crucial for effectively working with Beego and building high-quality web applications/services.

Familiarity with databases

Beego provides built-in support for connecting to and interacting with databases using the Structured Query Language (SQL) and object-relational mapping (ORM) paradigms. This allows developers to create and manage database tables, manipulate data, and execute complex queries using Go code. To work with Beego’s database features, developers need to have a basic understanding of how databases work and how to use SQL to interact with them. This includes understanding database design and schema, data types, constraints, indexing, and query optimization.

Without a basic understanding of databases and SQL, developers may struggle to create efficient and effective database-driven web applications using Beego. They might also encounter difficulties when it comes to scaling and maintaining their applications.

Along with these prerequisites, having some experience with other web development frameworks or technologies can also be helpful.

Beego developer road map

We have covered the prerequisites for learning Beego so far. Now, let’s explore the road map to mastering web development with Beego.

The roadmap of learning web development with Go and Beego would require a developer to learn the following, not necessarily in the order:

Learn the basics of the Go programming language

These are fundamental concepts in the Go programming language, including variables, functions, control structures, pointers, arrays, slices, maps, structs, interfaces, methods, and concurrency features like channels and goroutines.

Understand the concepts of web development

For web development, it’s essential to grasp concepts like the HTTP protocol, REST APIs, Websockets, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and web servers like Apache and Nginx.

Understand database concepts

Given the crucial role of databases in web applications, developers should grasp fundamental data concepts, SQL, various database management systems like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB, as well as data storage and retrieval principles.

Learn Beego fundamentals

To begin learning Beego, it’s important to grasp its architecture and directory structure, create controllers, models, and views, utilize Beego ORM for database interactions, and manage requests and responses through filters and middleware.

Build a few applications

It is recommended that you learn by practicing. This is when our concepts become clear, and we feel at ease with the process of developing applications and web services.

Learn advanced Beego topics

Once you know the basics of Beego and have practiced by building a few applications, move on to learn the following advanced topics:

  • Implementing authentication and authorization using Beego

  • Using Beego to build RESTful APIs

  • Creating custom filters

  • Handling errors and exceptions in Beego

  • Optimizing performance and scalability of Beego applications
