Programmers may not be judged by their clothes as much as, say, executives or salespeople. Even so, the people around us have their biases. We can choose to challenge them or decide we’re better off picking a different battle. Either way, we should choose consciously.


We humans haven’t lost our capacity for instinct—we will make snap decisions about situations and people in a split second. The R-mode, pattern-matching part of our brain will make a decision before any conscious thought has time to process. For example, thoughts like “That person looks professional”  can run through our minds before the person has time to say a word.

This value judgment may be right or wrong. In his book _Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking_, Malcolm Gladwell describes this judgment as a necessary way of dealing with the many people around us. We can’t afford the time to get to know everyone we meet on a deep, personal level before making any judgment about them. However, we have the skill of forming first impressions that serve us surprisingly well. It’s not perfect, but it has a darn good hit rate for taking only a couple of seconds.

We have to expect that others will make a first impression about us. With this in mind, we should make sure that we project the impression that we want to. For some people that may mean wearing a tie every day. For others, that may be appearing open and approachable. Or, it may even just be the way that you style your email signature. Whatever impression you want to project, make sure you set up your professional self to help you do so.
