We discussed disaster recovery and high availability briefly at the beginning of this course already, so we should have a general idea what it means. Now, let’s dive a bit deeper and learn about concepts and terminology that make discussing disaster recovery and high availability more objective.

Terminology

There are three important terms that we should definitely know about when discussing disaster recovery or high availability, and these terms are disaster, RPO, and RTO.

The term “disaster” seems self-explanatory, but let’s make it obvious. A disaster is any adversarial effect that negatively impacts our deployment. The moment at which a disaster happens is always a reference point when talking about the following terms.
