The product owner
The role of product owner originated in Scrum but has since been adopted for almost all Agile projects. As stated earlier, the product owner represents the customer and stakeholders, who typically think they don’t have enough time to be involved in the project on a daily basis. The product owner is often a senior user of the software being realized, with thorough knowledge of the domain, future developments, and the market. In addition, the product owner should preferably be a strong communicator, perhaps even a bit dominant.
The product owner prioritizes or organizes the project backlog and is responsible for selecting which work items they want realized at the start of an iteration. The team indicates how many work items can be realized. On a daily basis, the product owner makes in-depth decisions about work items, though this is also regularly done by the domain experts on the team.
Interestingly enough, it’s not uncommon that the product owner is hired externally. This is necessary, for example, if the actual users don’t have time to participate in the project or aren’t considered capable of taking the necessary decisions quickly and on a daily basis.
