What is a work breakdown structure?
A technical program manager adds value by taking the high-level program charter and breaking it down into manageable chunks.
One way we do that is by organizing the work into thematic groups. These thematic groupings are not bound by time. We will use a roadmap for that distinction.
This is sometimes referred to as a work breakdown structure (WBS). It is a hierarchical decomposition of the work required to complete a project. The WBS method is often used in project management, and we can utilize many of the same principles to break down higher-level programs.
A WBS typically starts with the program's overall goal at the top level, which should be stated clearly in the program charter, and then breaks down the necessary work into smaller, more manageable chunks. These chunks are sometimes called workstreams.
