Why mathematical logic?

Mathematical logic is the study of how we reason. Reasoning allows us to infer new conclusions from the current body of knowledge that we already have. We want this reasoning to be sound and precise.

By using tools from logic, we can precisely formulate statements, state our assumptions, ask questions, and express our existing knowledge. We can make valid conclusions about the phenomenon that we are studying. Logic allows us to examine any particular line of reasoning and its soundness. In other words, it will enable us to identify flawed reasoning.

Real-world applications

Logic is indispensable in every avenue of human life. In a court of law, judges must make sure that the arguments presented in a court case are sound and that the conclusions suggested by the lawyers are logical and valid. Logic is a question of life and death.

Lawmakers use logic to develop constitutions and promulgate laws. Scientists, engineers, and doctors all strive to adhere to the rules of logic. We need logic in “weaving, mining, farming, building ships, or baking cakes.Words taken from the poem “On Death, without Exaggeration” by Wislawa Szymborska— Polish poet and Nobel Laureate.” It takes a lot of imagination to think of a human pursuit that does not require logic. As a simple example, look at the following two sentences and appreciate that it is logic that enables us to conclude the equivalence of the two.

• If John works hard, then he will succeed.
• Either John does not work hard, or he will succeed.

Every learner needs at least a rudimentary knowledge of elementary logic. We can avoid logical fallacies by being aware of the rules of logic and how to conclude from given facts. It makes us better professionals and helps us lead a more mature and wholesome life. Simply put— every learner would benefit from the contents of this course.
