Availability Zone

Availability Zone

Learn about availability zones, features of an availability zone, update domains, and fault domains in this lesson.

What is an availability zone?

Availability zones (AZ) in Azure consist of physically and logically isolated data centers with their independent power source, network, and cooling systems. By connecting them to a network with extremely low latency, they can be used to deliver high-availability applications. In addition to computer and software problems, unforeseen events such as earthquakes, floods, and fires can cause failures. It is possible to tolerate failures using Azure services due to their redundancy and logical separation. All availability zone-enabled areas must have a minimum of three distinct availability zones to provide resilience.

Key features of an availability zone

Availability Zones are engineered for reliability, they provide data redundancy, fault tolerance, and scalability. Ensuring uninterrupted services, they safeguard against failures and offer businesses seamless continuity in a dynamic environment.

Here is a list of other important features:

  • Physical demarcation: Within a region, each AZ is physically separated from the other AZs, preventing infrastructure failures in one AZ from affecting the other AZs.

  • Reliable electricity and internet connectivity: Multiple power and network connectivity sources are present in AZs to provide redundancy and prevent downtime due to infrastructure breakdowns.
