What is Azure DNS?

In the Azure cloud, Azure DNS is a domain name system (DNS) service that allows you to host and manage your domain names. Azure DNS hosts DNS using Microsoft Azure infrastructure and provides name resolution. When you host your domains in Azure, you can manage your DNS records using the same credentials, APIs, tools, and billing you use for the rest of your Azure services.

What is a DNS zone?

A DNS zone is a particular area of the DNS namespace overseen by a specific administrator or organization. An administrative area called a DNS zone gives users more precise control over DNS elements like authoritative nameservers.

For computers, services, and other resources linked to the Internet or a private network, the Domain Name System (DNS) uses a hierarchical naming scheme. It unites numerous pieces of data, like Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and mail exchange servers, to domain names.

The DNS namespace is logically divided into zones. It consists of a group of DNS entries that are handled together. Several domains or a single domain name can be found in a DNS zone.

A DNS zone file contains the DNS records for a particular zone. A DNS server stores the zone file.
