What is mentoring?

Mentoring is a relationship in which one person shares their experience, skills, and knowledge with another person in order for them to progress in their career. Mentoring relationships typically last for months or years, with the mentor becoming an accessible point of contact for the mentee. Sometimes, a mentorship can last for a whole career.

We call mentoring a relationship because it is more than just being a designated person to offer occasional advice and feedback. Instead, a mentorship represents an investment in the career development of the mentee from the mentor. This means that the relationship has the following structure:

  1. Regular meetings
  2. An environment of encouragement and empowerment
  3. A focus on achieving goals

You have a number of skills that you could already be teaching via mentorship:

  • If you were previously an individual contributor, you have a number of skills that you could teach to a junior engineer.
  • By reading this course, you’ve already learned many skills that could allow you to be a mentor to another brand-new manager.
