What is the scale of delegation?
Successful delegation comes from giving the responsibility of a task to somebody else while maintaining accountability for it. There’s an art to doing it well. We can use the scale below to look at how a task should be delegated to an individual:
As you go from left to right on the diagram, the amount of delegation is increasing. It’s important to note that full delegation can only happen when the person being delegated can perform that task exactly to the standard that you expect with no guidance. The scale between no delegation and full delegation involves applying the right amount of teaching, coaching, mentorship, and check-ins. That is why retaining accountability is so important. It ensures that the task gets done properly and gives your staff a chance to learn and grow.
