Manual tests continue to have a role in the form of exploratory testing, usability testing, and other kinds of manual tests.

Not your father’s testing

The software world is in the middle of a sea change of testing approaches made possible by cloud computing, the ease with which changes can be promoted and rolled back, and, in some cases, new error modes arising from cloud computing. If your understanding of test practices is based on premised software and hasn’t been updated, spend some time learning about modern test practices such as Canary Releases (A/B testing), Chaos Monkey/Simian Army, and other cloud-specific test practices.
