# The Cycle

Eric Ries coined the `build-measure-learn cycle` in his book about Lean Startup, and like many other Lean Startup concepts, it has been widely misunderstood. 

**Build** does not necessarily mean creating software or creating a physical product; Otherwise, you fall into the construction trap.

**Building means doing the minimum necessary at the right time and in the right amount to reduce the maximum uncertainty.** Depending on the life cycle stage in which you find yourself, your main risks, and the budget you have available, you will build more or less expensive experiments.
